Welcome to Nova High School’s 10th grade summer reading!
Directions:
1. Please read “The Book of the Dead” by Shirley Jackson, a short story that explores the brutality than can arise in modern communities.
2. Then please read “Magic Island” by Cathy Song, a poem about a family that immigrates to the United States and spends the day at Angel Island in San Francisco. The poem describes the happiness of their new life, but also their anxieties about the future.
3. Please write 1-2 handwritten pages on notebook paper responding to the following question: In your opinion, what is the most important conflict your community is experiencing, and what are two healthy methods for solving it? Explain.
