Welcome to Nova High School’s 9th grade summer reading!

This assignment is for 9th graders taking:

• Pre-AICE English Language

• English 1

Directions: Students must read the short story “The Bass, the River, and Sheila Mant,” by W.D. Wetherell, along with Soneto (Sonnet) 71, by Pablo Neruda. The PDF of both texts is attached. Students must complete all parts of the assignment. Pre-AICE students will also complete a typed essay in response to the two texts. Students will be instructed to upload their completed work to Canvas the first week of school. Responses must be typed, New Times Roman, 12pt font and double-spaced.

Pre-AICE English Language: Write a 500 word/two-page double-spaced informative essay analyzing and comparing themes in "The Bass, the River, and Sheila Mant" by W.D. Wetherell and Pablo Neruda’s Sonnet 71. You will explore how both texts address themes of love, sacrifice, and growth.

Include a clear thesis statement that presents your main argument about how the two texts explore similar or different themes.

Develop your main points with reasons and textual evidence from both works.

Use transitions to clarify and connect your ideas.

End with a strong conclusion that summarizes your main ideas.

Thank you,
