June 2025
Dear Students,
Welcome to AICE English Language! To help prepare for the course, you will complete the following summer writing assignment, which is due on the first day of school. The following assignment is from an actual AICE exam, Paper 1. We will have many writing assignments just like this one throughout the year. The assignment should be typed (12pt, black, Times New Roman font) in a word doc and include your first and last name as well as the assignment title (10th Grade AICE Summer Assignment). Single or double spaced. You will submit the essay on Canvas.
To avoid any unpleasant surprises, be prepared for a lot of reading and writing. In addition to the summer requirements, you will be reading at least 4 novels and plays this year as well as many short stories and poems. You will also write several timed essays. This is a college-level course, so expect rigor.
Enjoy your summer, and I will see you in August.
Sincerely,
AICE English Language Teacher
Essay Prompt: Read and analyze the text (on the next page) for form, structure, and language. The essay should be between 700-900 words.
FORM - is the name of the text type that the writer uses. For example, scripts, sonnets, novels etc. All of these are different text types that a writer can use. The form of a text is important because it indicates the writer's intentions, characters or key themes. In this case, we are looking at how Stevenson creates his novel - looking at the different perspectives he uses.
